We are KLAART

KLA ART is Kampala’s free contemporary art festival produced by 32° East | Ugandan Arts Trust. The festival centers art in the city, and transforms relationships between artist and audience

The theme of KLA ART 21 is “This is Ours”, inviting artists and audience to reflect on questions of ownership and collectivity.

The 2021 edition is supported by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development, Arts and Humanities Research Council and Arts Collaboratory.

History

In 2012, 32° East | Ugandan Arts Trust in collaboration with Afriart Gallery, AKA Gallery, Alliance Française Kampala, Goethe-Zentrum Kampala, Makerere Art Gallery/IHCR, Nommo Gallery, and Uganda Museum, came together to hold Uganda’s first public art festival. In its first edition the festival turned Kampala into a living canvas placing 12 containers around the city as exhibition spaces for 12 outstanding visual artists.

After the first edition, 32° East became the sole producer of the festival and since then we have hosted two more editions, in 2014 and 2018, each with a unique thematic approach.

32° East has been preparing for the next edition of the KLA ART festival with 11 participants through a 9-month KLA ART Labs program. The initiative started in July 2019 with the Research and Concept Development labs and concluded with the Making Things Public Labs in February and March 2020.
